The power to heal lies within

Healing, Health

Without discounting traditional medicine entirely, it is important to realize that you also have a power within you to heal.

by Martha Reed —

Holistic health can mean many different things to different people. Wikipedia defines holistic health as “a concept in medical practice upholding that all aspects of people’s needs, psychological, physical and social, should be taken into account and seen as a whole.” As described above, the holistic view or whole-body approach of treatment is now widely accepted in medicine.

So where do the mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of holistic health lie? They lie where our true power resides — within each and every one of us. For many years, our culture has looked at health from the outside in. Advertisements abound for wonder drugs that tell us, “If you have x or y symptoms, all you have to do is take this red pill or that blue pill.”

Symptoms, however, are the body’s way of saying, “Hello! I am trying to get your attention over here, and I am going to get louder, then more painful and finally intolerable, until you have no other choice but to listen.”

These symptoms show up in numerous ways. They can be physical, as with a head cold or incurable disease, or they can be emotional as with someone suffering from the after-effects of a divorce, death of a loved one or even just general malaise.

Without discounting traditional medicine entirely, it is important to realize that you also have a power within you to heal. There is no one way to accomplish this; your way is unique, and only you know what is best for you. In order to know what yours is, you must get to know yourself — not your surface self — but that deeper part of you that knows exactly what it needs.

Each one of us is a unique soul. The trick is to know yourself and take steps every day to choose a healthy lifestyle — one that works holistically and feeds your spiritual, emotional, mental and physical health.
