Stories, stories and more stories

So many stories are floating around out there about everything under the sun that it is a challenge to discern which are real and which are fiction.

by Sherry Anshara —

In your childhood, someone — your parents, teachers, babysitters — read stories to you. Now you watch television shows: soap operas, telenovelas or nighttime dramas, etc. — more stories. You go to movies — more stories. And good grief, the news media sensationalizes stories on every channel for ratings. Everyone, including you, is inundated with stories, stories and more stories. Who, in fact, can really know what is real and what is fiction? The stories get so convoluted, but on purpose, of course.

Today the most popular way to induce, entice and mesmerize you on TV is by way of the reality show. The producers want you to see the “stars” of these shows as real people. If you look at many of the reality shows from an objective point of view, you may discover them to be “horror” shows. It is truly terrifying to think this is how conversations, relationships and “disconnected connections” are standardizing the story culture in the U.S.

Even history is told in story form, written from a person’s subjective viewpoint. Accounts of historical events are imparted with the author’s spin on what took place. The facts get altered to a degree, which can either inflate or deflate the facts of the event, convolute the historical account or blow it entirely out of proportion.

Stories, stories and more stories are told, retold and told again. As a matter of fact, so many stories are floating around out there about everything under the sun that it is a challenge to discern which are real and which are fiction. More often than not, the real collides with the fiction, making it even more difficult to know which is which.

Storyland troubles are usually depicted as the “normal” way of life. If these trauma dramas of how life is supposed to be are real, then ask yourself these questions: What is real in my life? What is my reality? Is my life a series of repeatable traumas with the same or similar players hashing and rehashing the same dialogue, continually becoming the “do-again” stories? If it is, then it is time for a reality check.

There is an element in all stories that can make an incredible difference in how you process them, including your own. Emotional attachment to the stories is the element. The stories can run rampant and out of control, especially when they are infused with distraught emotional attachments to the “what” and the “who” in the stories. When these stories, with all their confining, emotional attachments, are told again and again, it is challenging. You have to let go of the attachments, heal and move on with life.

Emotionally retelling your stories or trauma dramas only keeps you glued to the past, stuck in dysfunctional, repeatable relationships, and re-living the stories over and over in your head. This is unhealthy, restrictive and prevents you from being in the present moment and moving forward. The great news is that there is a way out — out of the past and out of the dysfunction.

Here are several practical and progressive steps to take:

  1. Get out of your computer/brain head.
  2. Stop retelling your emotional stories.
  3. See these stories as self-taught experiences to learn what is real and what is not for you.
  4. Acknowledge these self-created stories without blame or shame.
  5. Stay out of other people’s stories and trauma dramas.
  6. Create conscious experiences worth sharing.
  7. Embrace life from your heart.
  8. Trust your feelings.
  9. Enjoy the journey.
  10. Trust your intuition and gut feelings.

Are you creating an amazing experience that is best for you or are you jumping into an emotional trauma drama story? The choice is yours to make. Choose stories with emotional, repeatable, unrealistic hooks that keep you stuck, or instead choose self-created, real experiences controlled by you that are changeable, flexible, adaptable and lots more fun.
