Windows that do not have a tight seal will increase your utility bills, as well as decrease your energy efficiency.

How can you ensure that your home is as earth-friendly as possible? Three primary areas are often overlooked in new builds, and they were not even considered in older homes.

The first is leaky windows. Windows that do not have a tight seal will increase your utility bills, as well as decrease your energy efficiency. In addition, leaky windows cause poor circulation of air, which will impede air quality. Make sure that your windows are tightly sealed and that your home has a good ventilation system.

The second is insulation. Many houses have poor insulation, and the insulation is usually not good for the environment. Be sure that your home is insulated at the correct R value and, for best results, incorporates some of the greener products on the market.

The third consideration is your ductwork. Is it located in a place so that your heating/cooling system works to maximum efficiency? The best place to locate ductwork is in conditioned spaces, such as between floors. Otherwise, you are needlessly wasting energy.

These are just a few things you can address to green your home and make it a more comfortable and healthy living space.
