Colon hydrotherapy cleanses body and mind

An estimated 75 percent of Americans are constipated, in large part due to the standard American diet (SAD). If constipation is severe, adding fiber to the diet — the recommendation of most Western doctors — is equivalent to putting straw on top of cement. Laxatives irritate the lining of the colon and, in the long term, are damaging.

Hydrating the colon with warm water loosens impacted stools and stimulates peristalsis (the contraction of the smooth muscle fibers in the colon), eliminating the toxic feces. Because a primary function of the colon is to absorb water, the body is now able to get hydrated. Having a clean, well-functioning colon is the first step in being able to eliminate toxins from the body.

Chronic diarrhea can also be a sign that the pockets in the colon, called haustra, are impacted with just enough room for the liquid feces, called chyme, to pass through. Feeling bloated, tired and irritable are all signs that the microflora in your gut is out of balance, i.e., you have more bad than good bacteria, and your colon is in need of a cleanse.

So, what if you are in the 25 percent of people who, every day, have at least one large, healthy, banana-shaped bowel movement the consistency of peanut butter? Can you still benefit from colonics?

During a cleanse or detox, the body is intentionally stimulated to release more toxins than usual. The primary organ responsible for eliminating toxins from the blood is the liver, where bile is produced. Bile is an acidic substance that breaks down fats and absorbs metabolic waste, such as heavy metals, bad cholesterol and other toxins the liver has filtered out from the system. Most of the bile is reabsorbed in the intestines.

Bile is recycled several times a day and, if you do not cleanse the system, the recycled bile grows sludgier, eventually forming gall stones and leading to all sorts of inflammatory diseases and skin conditions.

Colonics stimulate the release of bile from the colon, along with the toxins it contains. In a perfect world where the air and water were clean and food did not need a label to be organic, this recycling of bile would be an amazingly efficient system.

Unfortunately, in today’s world, we are bombarded with toxins in the air we breathe, water we drink, mercury in our teeth, Teflon in our cookware and chemicals in hair dyes and nail polish. And while we can minimize some of our toxic load by eating an organic, high-fiber, plant-based diet, it is good to know that an occasional colonic can help our liver produce fresh bile and be more efficient at doing its job. This is why colon hydrotherapy is so beneficial in preventative and anti-aging medicine.

Emotionally, the colon is responsible for holding on to the past, not wanting to let go. So, if you are ready to release that which no longer serves you, getting a colonic may be just what you need — a cleanse of the body and the mind to restore you to 100 percent health.
