Using your intuition

Without any prior experience using our intuition, we may fear relying exclusively on it when making major decisions such as entering or leaving a marriage, quitting a job or changing a career.

by Andrea Hess —

Most people only turn to their intuition when faced with uncertainty around a major life decision. Unfortunately, it becomes a last resort, utilized after reason and logic have yielded unsatisfactory results. Without any prior experience using our intuition, we may fear relying exclusively on it when making major decisions such as entering or leaving a marriage, quitting a job or changing a career.

This is a bit like deciding we are going to take up running, and beginning with a marathon — next week. Obviously, since our body is not conditioned to take on this challenge, the results of attempting such a race without training would be damaging.

Similarly, starting our intuitive journey by trying to solve life’s really big questions can lead to unhappy results. If we are in a state of mental uncertainty and emotional upheaval, it is unlikely that we will receive accurate information if we have not trained ourselves in our intuitive abilities. The best place to begin applying our intuition is with life’s smaller choices.

We usually do not give these small choices much consideration. We tend to do what we are used to doing, or what others want us to do. And yet, the majority of our lives are shaped by the small decisions we make. Whether you spend your lunch hour browsing in a bookstore or eating with a friend can have a profound impact on your life. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you could decide to spend your time in a way that uplifts you and moves you forward on your growth path? How much would this change the quality of your day? Would you come home in a better mood, or relate differently to your family?

Our intuition offers us the opportunity to bring awareness to the seemingly small choices that shape our life experiences. We learn how to tune in to the path that leads to our greatest growth and fulfillment, not just in the long term but in our everyday circumstances. When we are secure that we are receiving accurate intuitive guidance in our everyday choices, we are ready to rely on our intuition for life’s bigger decisions, also.
