Why proper daily hydration is so important

Seventy-five percent of the physical structure of the human body is water, and 65 percent to 85 percent of the physical structure of every cell in our body is water.

by Dr. Eli Ber —

One of the primary reasons I pursued a career as a naturopathic physician was out of a desire to find a solution for my own health problems. I was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of Crohn’s Disease at age 16. This caused me to begin actively investigating all treatments associated with digestive health. I am convinced I have found a significant yet very simple therapy which has minimized the symptoms that have persisted for years.

Additionally, patients who have implemented this therapy have experienced improvement in conditions associated with allergies, asthma, acne, irritable bowel syndrome, gall bladder inflammation, stomach ulcers and inflammatory bowel disease.

The basic premise of this treatment is that we all suffer from a condition of chronic unintentional dehydration. Note the word unintentional. This condition is not necessarily the primary cause of your stress, chronic pains and degenerative diseases, but it is a major contributing factor. When this dehydration problem is corrected, the symptoms can disappear altogether. More likely, though, they simply will lessen in intensity. This is how powerful proper daily hydration is — it is transformational.

Seventy-five percent of the physical structure of the human body is water, and 65 percent to 85 percent of the physical structure of every cell in our body is water. Our blood is mostly water; our brain cells, mostly water. Water is the major component of each and every bodily fluid and carries nutrients (including oxygen) to our 100 trillion-plus cells, and carries away metabolic waste.

Our digestive system needs lots of water to properly process and effectively eliminate our fecal material. The root causes of all digestive system problems are dehydration, nutritional deficiencies, nutritional excess, dysbiosis and stress.

Most patients say they drink plenty of water throughout the day, but this treatment is not only about drinking more water. It is about making the water absorption more effective at the cellular level. To accomplish this type of hydration, the water has to be altered slightly.

Our natural instinct when we are feeling ill is to drink beverages that are hot or at room temperature. Instinctively we choose to do this because it is less stressful on the body when we do not have to expend energy to warm the fluids to match our body’s temperature. An important component of the recommended water therapy is to heat up the water to a specific temperature to increase absorption.

The water must also contain salt, which aids in the absorption and assimilation of the water molecules into your blood and into your cells. The salt also has an alkalinizing effect, which is conducive to the natural healing process. Celtic sea salt is best.

When the right amount of salt is added to water at the correct temperature, the taste is pleasant, not salty.

This therapy works immediately for most people. The day I started the water cure, I woke up with my usual digestive distress and fatigue. After drinking the required amount, first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, I felt an immediate shift. My digestion was stabilized, and my energy and mood were calmer. I felt a degree of relaxation, balance and sense of well-being that I had not felt in years.
