Let your intuition do the walking

Our unconscious language is symbolic, made up of feelings and impulses that may go unrecognized by the conscious mind.

by Rochelle Sparrow —

When was the last time you had an impulse to do something and then 10 minutes later found out why? “Wow, I knew I should have picked up that file,” you think, as you are two blocks from home and remember the urgent report you forgot at the office. “Now, I have to go all the way back to get it.”

You know what that is, other than an obvious inconvenience? That is Spirit’s little way of saying, “Heads up. I am leading you over here.” It’s a nagging, tugging little push from somewhere that says, “Hey, pay attention to me! I see something about to happen here and you need to act now!”

What is that little feeling that is always hanging around, hinting here and there at what you should do next? Why do we all have it?

Many people, like Carl Jung, believe we are all part of the collective unconscious, especially when we dream. It is like one big chat room — when our conscious minds are not in control, we log in and begin talking with each other. The only difference is, the language is not the same as our waking language. Our unconscious language is symbolic, made up of feelings and impulses that may go unrecognized by the conscious mind. In fact, because we are taught to be logical and reasonable people, we may even dismiss those feelings.

If we all began to follow our intuition, actually made it the primary leader in our lives, we would find ourselves in touch with a much more efficient and smarter way to live, one we would all want to utilize.

But, where do we begin if we’re not yet quite in tune with this language, these feelings and these impulses?

One place to start is with the Intuition Challenge — five steps for recognizing and acting upon your intuition.

  1. Notice your intuition by noticing your impulses. Each morning, make a commitment to look in the mirror and say, “Today, I am going to follow whatever impulses come into my mind pushing me to do something I would not normally do.” Pick up that set of keys, stop at the grocery store even though you had not planned on it, or call Uncle Harvey, even though you do not usually talk to him and there is no reason to call. Do that three days in a row, journaling the results each night.
  2. Reread the results you journaled. What happened during the three days? What would have happened if you had not followed your intuition in those instances? It may have meant a long trek across town to get those keys, back out to the grocery store to buy toothpaste or forgetting Uncle Harvey’s birthday.
  3. Kick it up a notch. Begin to focus on those feelings and impulses by eliminating even your most logical reasons for not following your intuition. Yes, you will be late if you do not take the freeway this morning, but something is really telling you not to. You want to enter that picture you painted in the art contest; you are sure there are better artists entering, but you decide to do it anyway. Your intuition is telling you not to take that job, even though the money and benefits are good.
  4. Notice those dreams about what you really want to do in your life. Are you a comic? A romance novelist? A political blogger? Notice the intuitive impulses that point you to your true, creative self.
  5. Just do. Put aside all thoughts of fear and non-belief, be courageous in your acts of self discovery and reach into the depths of yourself with your intuition as your ever-present and supportive guide.

I know you can do it. And intuitively, you know it too.
