In one way or another, we have all experienced harm at some point in our lives. The question that follows, however, is what have you done with the associated pain and anger? Do you need to forgive someone or forgive yourself? Have you ever thought of forgiveness as an act of self-love?
It is a natural human reaction to want to get back at those who have hurt us — to make them pay for what they have done. The emotions of revenge and anger are very powerful, and we know that holding on to them can cause a variety of harmful physical effects. But what about the emotional and spiritual consequences? When we hold pain and anger in our hearts and spirits, our capacity for love suffers and our divine light is diminished. Our pain not only dims our light, but begins to ripple out to those closest to us. Our suffering can become their suffering. Only you hold the power to release your pain and end the suffering — forgiveness is the key.
Forgiveness does not mean what the person did was right or that we can just forget what happened. Forgiveness is an act of embracing oneself with love. It is a declaration that we no longer allow the other person or the event to hold influence over us.
Forgiveness involves the re-examination of what happened from a new perspective — the perspective of the higher self. When viewed in this manner, we are reminded that we are spiritual beings having a human experience. And although we have been through something hurtful, a lesson can be learned. A mindset of, “It did not happen to me; it happened for me,” allows a shift in awareness that can bring emotional healing, as well as spiritual growth.
We all come into this world with our true essence: the wisdom of love and the light of divinity shining within. Let us remember to rise above human nature and embrace our divine spirit. An act of compassion to oneself is a most beautiful gift.
