Psychology recognizes three states of life. There is a state of knowing. There is a state of knowing that you know. And then there is the state of knowing you know that you know. I like to think of the first as the gathering of facts and of intellect. The second is intuition. And the third is inspiration. Knowing you know that you know means a high degree of certainty and absolute knowing.
In life, as we experience fear and guilt, we go off on tangents with our emotions. We experience feelings of uncertainty. When we are living in the past or in the future, we are not present. But when we are inspired and we have love and gratitude, we become present. Suddenly, we know that we know that we know, and we have an inspiring certainty.
Imagine that someone comes up and asks you if you love somebody. You may initially be caught in your emotions and think, “Well, I’m attracted to him, yet I’m repelled by him; I don’t want to live without him, and I don’t want to live with him.” You are uncertain. You just “know” things.
But if you reach a point where you go into a deeper state of love and appreciation, you begin to know that you know things. You have more certainty. Finally, you have a moment of presence with a person. You are absolutely in love. You know that you know that you know. Nobody can make you waver.
Inside the human heart is a knowing that surpasses all doubt. It is the certainty of certainties. This is the law of knowing, at its finest. When we go into the heart, we know that we know that we know. It is like the love we have for our child. When we know we love our child, there is no question. The child may do things we like or dislike. We may be attracted or repelled — but deep inside, we know that we know that we know that we truly love. In this state of love and appreciation, in this state of grace, we are in this state of knowing.
With love and gratitude …
